Keeping Students Moving During the Fremantle Bridge Closure
The closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge posed a major challenge to school travel across the region but behind the scenes, a coordinated effort has ensured students can continue getting to school with little to no disruption.
In the weeks leading up to the closure, our operations and planning teams collaborated closely with Main Roads WA, the Department of Education, local schools and other stakeholders, to map every possible route variation and contingency. The goal was simple: make sure every student still arrived safely and on time.
Key measures included adjusting school bus timetables, identifying alternate route paths, and pre‑testing detours to avoid congestion hotspots. Drivers received updated information and training sessions to help them navigate the new routes confidently.
Regular communication with schools and parents through email updates and driver briefings has helped keep everyone informed and reassured throughout the process.
The result? Minimal impact on travel times and uninterrupted service for hundreds of students who rely on school buses every day.
This achievement highlights the strength of collaboration between transport providers, government agencies and local communities. When challenges arise, it’s the people behind the planning.
As the Fremantle Traffic Bridge project progresses, we’ll continue monitoring and adapting to keep journeys safe, reliable, and efficient for every student we serve.
For now this planning and corroboration with stakeholders has paid dividends and we continue to provide our clients with transport solutions in challenging times.
